  • Last year I worked with the Department of Agriculture & Food, W.A. to make a 30 minute DVD for small landholders on the responsibilities of owning sheep and goats. It was a great success, and this year we completed a DVD for cattle owners outlining the requirements of owning, identifying and moving cattle.

This was a substantial project – planning began months before the sheep & goats project was commissioned. Filming commenced in December, 2008 with the bulk of the vision shot in one week. Editing took place in February and March and the DVD and booklet were launched in May.

Both DAFWA projects were shot with Supernova’s JVC PROHD HD111 camera in standard definition 16:9.

  • A week in April was spent in Manjimup filming a series of field days for the Department of Water. We created a DVD to distribute among the landholders of the Warren River Catchment showing the benefits of using perennials to lower the water table and control salinity. The Warren is one of the only river systems in W.A. which is still fresh, but under threat.

Thirty six farms in the catchment have planted perennials with varying degrees of success. We visited eight of the best.

By recording the field days and distributing the DVDs to all the farmers in the catchment area, the information was delivered in the most effective way.

  • VIDEO ON THE ‘NET
Many businesses are using video on the internet to demonstrate new products or attract new customers from further afield. Some are doing it themselves “in-house” and while this is great for hobbyists and amateurs, businesses need to be careful it doesn’t reflect poorly on their overall corporate image. Shaky camerawork, bad lighting, poor sound and sloppy editing will ruin your credibility as a professional business. Potential customers won’t remember the message, just how badly it was presented.

When we make video for the web, we use the same equipment and same high production values as if we are doing a TV commercial or DVD. Even though internet video quality is still quite low, the higher quality you start with, the better the end result. That’s why I often shoot YouTube videos in HD.

An added bonus is that the video quality is suitable for broadcast use, as a TV commercial.
Looking at it another way, if you are considering doing a TV commercial, why not put your ad on YouTube or Vimeo, and link it to your website? Because TV ads are so short (15 secs, 30 secs) we can make your ad, then cut a longer version for the web!

Our list of commercial clients is growing faster this year. Check out some of their ads here.
